Best Find Patchwork Challenge 2026 - January to June edition - WINNERS!

Hello from the Patchwork Challenge team! 

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a find for the spring Best Find Competition. Now, we would like to congratulate the three winners who came through the public vote with the majority of the public vote. These three winners will all receive a Patchwork Challenge Pin Badge.

First Place:
The long-staying, singing male Great-tailed Grackle found by Jackie Binks at Garston Coastal Reserve and Oglet. Nearly 60% of voters had the Grackle as part of their favourite three. Well done Jackie, truly well deserved!  


Second Place: 
A male Common Redstart found by Tom Bedford at his urban Lye Valley patch, he just nipped ahead of third place by a single vote! A wonderful submission, and very descriptive. 


Third Place: 
Wood Warbler found by Tyler Atkinson at Clifford Hill Gravel Pits finishes in third with 43% of the voting. Another brilliant submission, and one of many very good local finds for Tyler on his Northamptonshire patch. 


There were also many other superb submissions, and it was incredibly close for fourth place with three entries all on equal amount of votes. Thank you to everyone for taking part in the competition. We will be running the competition again, for the second half of the year come the end of December. If anyone has further suggestions for prizes, then please get in touch. The adding of further prizes may mean more categories.

Hello from the Patchwork Challenge team! We are now accepting submissions for the Best Find of the first half of Patchwork Challenge 2026, although you can still find birds eligible for this competition until the end of June. There are three Pin Badge prizes up for grabs, and here is how to get a hold of one of them.  One of the Pin Badges up for grabs! It doesn't need to be a particularly rare bird in a national sense, just something that made you excited to find. For example it could be how you have thought a hedgerow looks amazing for a Pied Flycatcher, but as you live in say Northamptonshire, it is a shockingly rare bird. Finally however, after years of checking that spot, you eventually come across one. We want to hear that buzz and excitement in your entry.  Firstly, you will need to submit a paragraph or two to describe why that find on your patch was special. Ideally, it would say how you came across the bird on your patch, how many records there have been in your area...

Hi from the Patchwork Challenge team!  This is an exciting one. This is where you, the public, get to decide on the Best Find of Spring #PWC2026. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who submitted an entry for the competition. All the entries are fantastic and we have thoroughly enjoyed reading through them all. We hope you enjoyed compiling your submissions, but most importantly enjoyed the moment of finding the bird! However, now is the time we head over to the public to vote for the lucky winners! What is the 'patchwork' challenge?

The birding fraternity has seen a shift in attitudes recently, with many birders turning their attention from twitching towards rarity finding.   As a result, there also seems to have been an upturn in the profile watching a local patch. The advantages of watching a local patch are obvious. Low fuel costs and travel time aside, great pleasure can be derived from getting to learn a place inside out, observing how the seasons change, and getting value from common species that otherwise wouldn’t get a second glance. Throw in the potential for the odd rare bird or scarcity and to me, you have a really exciting, involving way to enjoy your birding. So what could enhance the patch watchers enjoyment a little? Well, perhaps adding an element of competition would do the trick. We’re a competitive bunch, us birders, both with our peers and ‘internally’ as well.
