Wales - August 2015

Alison failed to make any additions in the hills of LlanfairTH and although her lead has been cut she still has 19% over Alun John at Pennard Golf Course who is in second. Alun has had a super month jumping from fifth to second and cracking the 100% barrier thanks to a Lesser Whitethroat amongst others. Henry Cook holds onto third with his Conwy RSPB patch after recording Little Gull and Scaup while Adam Tilt drops out of the top three.

Laurie Allnatt finishes his time at Llanelli WWT this month and ends on 173 points and whilst still leading Mathew Meehan is hot on his heels so it seems unlikely he will manage to hold on for the final four months but a super effort including one of this years best finds with a smart Bonaparte's Gull. Down at Newport Wetlands Mathew leapfrogs Barry Stewart and lands in second after adding Wood Sandpiper. Barry failed to make any additions in August while David Carrington closes the gap on the podium.

Black Tern at Fendrod Lake - with thanks to Alun John
There were no bonus point scorers this month in the principality but plenty of decent patch birds widely spread. Paul Roberts added Marsh Harrier at Ogmore and further raptor additions included a Goshawk for Emma Cram at Broughton and Llangennith. Mike Cram managed to find a Wood Sandpiper at Ogmore while Peter Howlett added Whimbrel. Spot Flys were recorded by Peter and Ceri Jones. A Black Tern was a patch tick for Alastair Flannagan on his Swansea Vale to Fendrod Lake patch. Finally a piece of patchgold for Julian Hughes with a Nuthatch at Conwy RSPB.

  1. Sorry it appears that I never managed to post my June, July or August additions of Fulmar, Tufted Duck, Nuthatch, Rook, Kingfisher, Osprey and finally a Bullfinch! These take my species total onto 132 & points total onto 174. My list pretty much ceased at this point last year when I reached 145 spp, so I'm well behind that, but still have a few common migrants I'm hoping to pick up before they all move through.

  2. Apologioes from me - I never claimed to have found the Wood Sandpiper in my monthly submission, merely intended to just mention it as a special seen, this bird was Paul Robert's find!!
